Giambattista Valli Paris Couture: The Volume Trend Prevails, Dresses Like Topiaries

The fall couture shows, currently being held in Paris this week, reflect what fashionistas will be wearing on red carpets at the Venice Film Festival and during fall awards season. Looks shown this week will also affect spring ready-to-wear eveningwear, shown in September and October, and all eveningwear trends this coming season.

So what have we seen? For Dior, Raf Simons did a lot of colors mixed with black -- reds, pinks, blues -- with a return of volume, peplums and full skirts, mostly in solids, with some florals. Versace did colorful prints and textures in airy, barely-there fabrics. Now, Giambattista Valli has gone full-force into volume with dresses and gowns featuring so much density, they look like the fabric version of topiaries.

They're great and picturesque on a runway -- but who can actually wear one of these floral dresses that appear to have wreaths of fabric at the neck, hips or hem? Our guess: very slender ladies who love fashion, like Diane Kruger, who wore a Valli couture gown for opening night at Cannes, or Keira Knightley. These dresses are serious statements.

The real trend that will carry on here, though, is this: volume does seem to be back. While the fall ready-to-wear clothes all look very stark and close to the body, it's looking like designers want to see fuller skirts, fuller coats (with belts), and evening dresses with mermaid hems or large neck detail, even exaggerated hips, as the next big fashion thing.

These gemstone pink prom dresses -- ruby, emerald, and deep green with black -- are great statements of feathers, embellishment and ornamentation, but how deeply they will make inroads into Hollywood is anyone's guess. We don't see Angelina Jolie going in this direction.

Rent Your Bridal Tiara: Collaborative Consumption for Weddings

Anyone of you that have planned or are planning a wedding realize how expensive it is, not to mention a waste of resources for one day! The wedding gown, accessories, centerpieces all cost hundreds of thousands of dollars never to be used again. Wedding costs and resources can be easily shared and offer an ideal model for reuse, yet the societal pressures and retail marketing on making it a “special” day has embedded a wasteful representation of weddings in our minds.
One business is trying to bring much-needed collaborative consumption to weddings. “Happily Ever BorroWED” is making renting accessories for your wedding a snap! It is a premiere e-boutique that RENTS bridal accessories to brides for their wedding day!
Collaborative Consumption describes the rapid explosion in traditional sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping reinvented through network technologies on a scale and in ways never possible before.
Brittany Haas, the woman behind Happily Ever BorroWED graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Fiber Science & Apparel Design. She says, the inspiration for Happily Ever BorroWED came while she helped her sister plan her big day. When the wedding budget spiraled, they realized there was not much value to the thousands they were spending, considering all that expense was for one day. While studying fashion sustainability in college, Brittany understood that the only way waste could be reduced practically in the fashion industry was through sharing.
Thus Happily Ever BorroWeD was born. Brittany says,
“With cost consciousness and environmental concerns on the rise, people are desperate to eliminate waste and save money. With this in mind, I set out to disrupt the wedding industry.”
How can you Rent Bridal Accessories?
“Happily Ever BorroWED” curates a collection of gorgeous designer bridal accessories from the top designers in the industry.
They rent those pieces to brides for 15% of the retail price.
Brides can use styling tools to help them pick the right accessory online.
Everything is carefully managed and brides are supplied with a pre-paid return label in each order so that all they need to do is “Rent, Wed & Return.”
Brittany’s business fills a major void in the wedding industry. She was able to grow a business out of a problem that many brides are facing today. Do you have a business idea that uses collaborative consumption to lower costs, use fewer resources and provide a valuable service? We will love to hear from you!
